Climate Change adaptation is any effort or action taken to reduce or prevent negative impacts of current climate change effects. Adaptation can be done on a personal, community, provincial or national scale.
Why develop Climate Change Plans?
Developing a Climate Change mitigation plan allows your community to reduce and prevent the emission of greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. Assessing the risks and opportunities for mitigation efforts is a cost-effective and strategic way to combine mitigation priorities with existing and upcoming work plans and budgets.
Developing a Climate Change adaptation plan allows your community to be more resilient to Climate Change impacts. Climate Change impacts are here - they can be seen in the increased summer temperatures, greater fire risk, increased flooding events, more frequent and more intense storms events among many others. Adaptation planning is the process of evaluating your community’s climate vulnerabilities and prioritizing approaches to manage and minimize the impacts of Climate Change in your community.
Many municipalities combine Climate Change mitigation and Climate Changeadaptation planning to ensure integration of the resulting workplans and budgets.

Project Design and Implementation
Climate Change planning in your region may require information that you do not currently have. For example, you may be considering natural solutions - such as increasing tree cover - but not have any data about the current situation. For example if you are considering using wetlands to capture GHG emissions (which they do very well), you also need to know about the status of existing wetlands - how many do you have? Do they need protecting? How many GHG emissions will you reduce based on your planning?
